30年続く伝統的な漢方薬局・診療所をリノベーションするプロジェクト。台湾の伝統的な漢方薬局のスタイルを保ちながら、これまで漢方になじみのなかった客層にとっても、訪れること自体が豊かな体験として感じられる、新しい診療所を目指した。

大通りに面して建つこの建物は、１階を漢方薬局と診察の待合スペース、2階を診察室として計画した。１階部分は通りから見ると、大きなガラス面の開放的なファサードと、通りに向かって延びる大きな一枚庇によって、漢方薬棚を背景とした人の動きが切りとられ、フレーミングされている。シンプルな文字による店舗サインと調剤スペースの人々の所作そのものが一枚の絵のように重なり、この店舗の顔となる。
台湾の伝統的な漢方診療所では、患者と薬剤師がカウンターを挟んで対面となり、患者はスツールに腰かけて薬剤師や他の患者と話しながら、漢方薬が処方されるのを待つのが定番の形式である。薬剤師は背面の薬棚に納まる数百種類に及ぶ漢方の中から適したものを選び出し、患者と向き合いながら調合していく。このまるでカウンター型の喫茶店やバーのようなやりとりが、気軽で濃密なコミュニケーションを生み、健康状態のチェックにも繋がっている。かつての診療所で使われていたヒノキの薬棚と作業台の表面を磨きあげ、オリジナルに近い形で空間に戻すことで、古くからの患者にも馴染み深いコミュニケーションの形を引き継いだ。

A renovation of 30-year-old clinic, the traditional oriental pharmacy and clinic, has completed the final touch. We aimed to create a new style of clinic where both regular and new customers can experience sophisticated and pleasant space meanwhile maintaining traditional style.
Located on the avenue, the first floor is designed as pharmacy and waiting space, the second floor as consulting room. Viewing from the avenue, a large expansive façade and a long eave of the first floor frame the picturesque scene of activities inside against the background of antique wooden shelves. The movement of people shapes the iconic image of this clinic together with simple graphic sign.
In a typical traditional pharmacy, patients wait for the prescription facing pharmacists and seating across a counter, chatting with them. Pharmacists select specific herbal medicine from hundreds of drawers behind the counter and dispense medicines in front of patients. This communication like at cafe or bar makes casual and close relationships between patients and pharmacists, making it easier to check their health conditions. We kept antique wooden shelves and counter which have been used in this clinic for more than 30 years as the icon to take over the traditional way of communication. Their surfaces were polished and they were placed at the original position to make the space familiar to regular patients even after the renovation.
As the client requested to demonstrate hospitality with oriental medicine while patients wait for consultations, we designed a long white marble table on which customers can have the soup and tea made out of herbs. Furthermore, we suggested renewing visual images of logos and packages displayed on shelves to introduce the new concept of oriental medicine clinic, that to hope every customer will feel close to the oriental medicine as if selecting cosmetics or gifts.
